Description

Martijn Storms MA (Arnhem, 1978), is curator of maps and atlases at Leiden University Libraries. He studied human geography and planning at Utrecht University, where he specialized in GIS and cartography.

2022 marked 150 years since the death of the map collector Johannes Tiberius Bodel Nijenhuis (1797-1872). He bequeathed his enormous map collection to Leiden University. Over the years the map collection in Leiden grew and now it is one of the greatest map collections in the Netherlands. To commemorate this, the book Maps That Made History: 1000 Years of World History in 100 Old Maps was published. In the book the geographical, temporal and thematical variety of Leiden’s map collection is put forward. To complement the publication of the book, the exhibition Maps: Navigating & Manipulating was organized in the National Museum of Ethnology in Leiden. That exhibition is running until October this year.

The talk will focus on the cartographic collections of Leiden University Libraries as well as the people and institutions behind these collections.
